Abbreviation- WUD

22 year old Neil Papworth was able to send the first text message to mobile phone set on December 3rd 1992. The text message read “Merry Christmas”. As to today texting has changed majorly over the past 26 years by adding abbreviations to our texting such as from 26 years ago to now people would change the way they had texted “merry Christmas” to “mry Xmas”. This is to make it either more efficient, a quicker way for us to type or if we are either just jumping on the trend.

An abbreviation is a shortened word or phrase. It consists of a group of letters taken from the word or phrase.A way we can improve our text messaging is by using initialism, such as Wud. Wud is an abbreviation of what you doing or what are you doing. Abbreviations such as Wud can help us in a way of making it more efficient while we are texting, and to increase the convenience for the time consuming and often small keyboards on smaller phones. A downside to using abbreviations such as wud is that not everyone may not understand the meaning or when it should be used among-st texting.

Homophones are of two or more words that have the same pronunciation but different meanings, origins or spelling. The word “what you doing” can be abbreviated to Wud giving these two words the same meaning. “what you doing” is shortened to Wud because of each letter in that phrase represents a word used in the full phrase. As it could also not only be “Wud” but could also be abbreviated to Wyd and with many other ways to shorten it. As for the “U” in “Wud” represents the word “you” making these two words homophones.

The first emoji was created in 1999 in japan by Shietaka Kurita. Emojis are used in electronic messages. Emojis exist in many different genres, including facial expressions, common objects, animals and many more different variety’s of emojis. A way we use these emojis the most is to show whom we are texting a way of our facial expression at that moment or how we are feeling at the time. Emojis could also be used to fill in a word that represents the same meaning or sound which can help by looking at homophones.

  1. Wesley, I would encourage you to focus on using the word text rather than written so that you can be clear about the difference between something you send my text message and something you might write an essay. This way you are able to talk about how we use text messaging differently to the traditional use of writing.
